NAGPUR: Newly appointed Chief Justice of India Uday Lalit on Saturday said he was not here to make any promises, but he will do everything to the best of his ability, knowledge and belief during his tenure.
At a felicitation programme organised by High Court Bar Association (HCBA) here, the CJI became emotional while recollecting his fond memories of the city, where he declared that his legal journey had begun from Nagpur. “It (life) is not what you have covered, but how you covered that,” he said while quoting a poem from acclaimed writer Rudyard Kipling.
Apologising for his emotional breakdown and pausing for a while, he said he was fortunate to come from a family having legal background of over a century. “My grandfather started practice in Solapur and since then the unbroken chain of our legal journey has continued for 102 years. I may be the happiest person that my earlier and next generation would be still in practice when I step down in three months. That is the part of life, and it is the journey you undertake.”
The programme was attended by who’s who from the judicial fraternity, including justice Bhushan Gavai, former SC judge Vikas Sirpurkar, Bombay high court chief justice Dipankar Dutta, Nagpur bench administrative judge Sunil Shukre, Justices Prasanna Varale and Atul Chandurkar, additional solicitor general Anil Singh, advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhkoni, retired HC judges, lawyers and law students.
