Addressing the concluding session of the 90th Interpol General Assembly, Shah said, “We cannot fight terrorists and terrorism globally unless there is a common definition of both. Commitment to fight terrorism and differentiating good or bad terrorism or classifying terror attacks as big or small cannot go together.”
‘Terrorism is the biggest violation of human rights’
Terming terrorism “the biggest violation” of human rights, home minister Amit Shah on Friday said, “It is necessary to build a consensus on the challenge of cross-border terrorism being spread through online radicalisation, we can’t treat this problem as a political problem.”
He urged Interpol and its member countries to think beyond the conventional geographic borders to defeat cross-border terrorism. He also urged Interpol to take an initiative to create a permanent mechanism for setting up a ‘real-time information exchange line’ between counter-terrorism agencies and anti-narcotics agencies of all member-countries.
The Modi government, he said, had decided to develop a national database on terrorism, narcotics and economic offences and had set up the Indian Cyber-Crime Coordination Centre (I-4C) to ensure a comprehensive response system to cybercrime.
Shah further said it was extremely relevant that the first and most important target among the seven global policing goals of Interpol for 2020-25 is “countering the threat of terrorism”. He also suggested that Interpol prepared a ‘future plan’ for the next 50 years on the basis of its experience and achievements over the last 100 years.
“The concept of establishing a state is always followed by the need for its policing. Indian manuscripts offer great insight on concepts like amicable justice and due punishment… justice is crucial for good governance which follows the creation of a good society,” the minister said.
Addressing the delegates from 195 countries, Shah said India is committed to assist Interpol in setting up a dedicated centre and launching a communication network for counter-terrorism and anti-narcotics agencies around the world.
