NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Saturday asked the Gujarat chief secretary and police chief to immediately furnish a compliance report regarding action taken on its directions in August to transfer officials who are either posted in their home district or have completed three years in a district.
The EC, in its letter sent to the Gujarat chief secretary on Saturday, noted that it had on August 1, 2022, issued the directions for transfer of the aforementioned set of officials and asked the chief secretary and DGP to submit a compliance report with details of action taken, by September 30. However, as no report was received, EC sent a reminder on October 19.
The EC has now directed that its the instructions dated August 1, 2022, be complied and reports sent immediately. Further, it asked the Gujarat chief secretary and DGP to explain the circumstances “as to why the compliance report was not furnished sofar even after lapse of stipulated time-limit despite issuing of a reminder in the matter”.
The EC had in August asked the poll-bound states of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat to transfer any official directly connected with the conduct of polls if he or she is posted in her/his home district or if she/he has completed three years in that district during last four years or would be completing three years on or before January 31, 2023, in the case of Himachal and February 28, 2023, in case of Gujarat.
