The India B team, consisting of Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, Nihal, Raunak and Adhiban, won the bronze medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Chennai.
This was India’s second medal at the Chess Olympiad after a bronze in 2014. However, the India women’s team, led by Tania Sachdev, lost to the USA 1-3.
The Uzbekistan team, which was seeded 14th in the tournament, won the gold medal in the men’s section.
The 44th Chess Olympiad, held at Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, will be coming to an end later on Tuesday after the 11th and final round. The closing ceremony will follow after that.
This was the first time the tournament was held in India and a record number of teams took part in the Open and women’s sections.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will be presiding over the closing ceremony.
International Chess Federation president Arkady Dvorkovich and recently elected deputy president and former World champion Viswanathan Anand will be attending the event.
Former India men’s cricket team captain and Chennai Super Kings star Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also expected to be at the event and will be a star attraction.
