Atul Kulkarni made his debut as a screenwriter with Advait Chandan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

The actor recently opened up about the criticism Aamir faced over his ‘gimmicky’ performance in ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and the much talked about Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo in the film. According to Atul, Aamir’s interpretation of Laal and its tone was mutually agreed upon by the actor and the director. The actor-screenwriter added that he was hardly on set. He just went twice.

However, Atul added that what people were saying before watching the film, it mellowed down after they watched it, for most people, because of the way the character grows later on. The actor also added that he absolutely understands if some people feel like that. That’s also because they have kind of seen glimpses of it before in some other films. According to him, it is a reaction to the memory rather than what Aamir did. It was more driven because of the memory of his characters rather than Laal itself, Atul told Indian Express.

Shah Rukh Khan’s special appearance in the film was also something that was widely loved by the audience in the film. Spilling some beans on the same, Atul stated that there was a group who had made an excel sheet calculating what could be Laal’s age at that particular time when he met Shah Rukh. He felt that he was lucky to get that timeline. Shah Rukh is from Delhi and there is an iconic style associated with him. According to him, if the timeline would not have matched, he would not have been able to take it in, even if he had thought it.

‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ also featured Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya in key roles.
