Over 14,000kg of drugs valued at around Rs 1,864 crore were destroyed as part of a special drive overseen by Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, reports Rajshekhar Jha. While chairing a meeting on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ in Gandhinagar, Shah said 1.6 lakh kg of drugs had been destroyed in the country during the 75-day Amrut Mahotsav to celebrate 75 years of independence as compared to the target of 75000 kg.
The home minister expressed concern about increase in the smuggling of heroin from the West coast and urged the governments of Maharashtra and Goa to play a “proactive role” in the fight against the drug menace. “From 2006 to 2013, 1.5 lakh kg of drugs worth Rs 768 crore were seized, while from 2014 to 2022, 3.3 lakh kg drugs worth Rs 20 thousand crore were seized,” Shah said.
